~ Aug 3, 2009

A new government report shows some 90,000 Ugandans became infected with HIV in 2008, increasing the country's overall infection rate to 6.4 percent from 6 percent four years ago. Of the new infections among those ages 15-49, 43 percent occurred in people who reported being in a monogamous relationship over the past 12 months, the New Vision newspaper quoted the report as saying. Commercial sex workers, their clients and partners of clients accounted for 10 percent of new infections. The report also noted a shift in concentration of the epidemic from younger to older Ugandans.
