Controversy continues to brew in Zambia following a failed HIV/AIDS trial that resulted in 46 women contracting the virus.About 1, 340 were engaged in the HIV Microbicide Gel Clinical Trial late 2009 at Microbicides Development Programme (MDP) -Zambia clinic.
The spokesperson of the clinical trial in Zambia, Kennedy Mundia says, "The idea of the Gel was to bring in something that the women would also use and protect themselves. We wanted to know whether it was safe as well as being effective in the prevention of HIV and AIDS.
According to AfricaNews, Mundia said, "The conclusion was that it was found to be safe but not effective in protection of HIV and AIDS."
The involved women in the trial said that they were told the trial would help in the fight against HIV and AIDS and that they were keen to see a solution to this deadly disease.
However, angry residents of the small town Mazabuka where the trial was conducted are worried and feel betrayed and want those women infected to be compensated.
The botched trial was conducted between September 2005 and September 2009 in Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.
The trials were conducted by MDP a non profit organization based in London.
